Thoughts on social media culture and a list of affirmations that empower me to pay less attention to my phone - from Aris Hearth of A Perspective of Leaves
What a great aerial view of the broader landscape of phone-based distraction. The unmanageability it can create in individual lives is so real, and so is the rippling out into the collective. And you so aptly name that the story isn't complete without tying in the culpability of the tech industry and Capitalism run amok. The planet thanks you for these reflections and so do I.
There is an awfully-great book called "Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention--and How to Think Deeply Again." At some point I had to pause reading it because it was too much for me (meaning: too relatable), but I finished it nevertheless.
PS: we're all doomed (and this book was written before introduction of ai to the masses).
Sounds interesting, Victoria - and yes, it can all feel very overwhelming the more our whole culture revolves around this stuff. I've heard there's a movement among some younger people to intentionally avoid it, with flip phones only etc. There is hope.💜
Thank you so much, Aris - the problem of social media and attention is only going to get worse, especially as new generations raised since birth with iPads and phones comes of age. Great article!
Thank you, my hope is to inspire more mindfulness around social media! I taught a class this semester where I gave a social media reflection as an assignment and I really enjoyed reading what everyone's relationship to social media was and the goals they set around it
Thanks for sharing

thank you for this comment and feedback! it's surely a collective issue actively and purposefully enabled by tech giants
Thanks so much for your comment, Keith! It is quite a pickle we've landed in...
